AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Allysa Vandenberg wins Discovery Bay Women’s Club scholarship

DISCOVERY BAY — The Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club presents a scholarship each June to a worthy female athlete graduating from Chimacum High School.

This year the scholarship was renamed as the “Sheila Kilmer Female Student Athlete Scholarship” in honor of the woman who has championed this award since its beginning. Kilmer retired from Chimacum High School as administrative secretary and has been a long-standing member of the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club.

Congratulations go to this year’s recipient, Chimacum senior Alyssa Vandenberg. Vandenberg not only ranked eighth in her graduation class, but also served as president of both her senior class and the National Honor Society.

Members of the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club include Cindy Westwood, Pat Burns (104 years old), Norma Matthewson and Sue Lund.

Her many talents and awards include being a four-time winner of the Chimacum student of the month, a state qualifier for the golf team, second all-league team in both basketball and volleyball, a national championship in softball, various academic sport awards and top scores in solo and ensemble contests. Vandenberg plans to attend Centralia Community College this fall to play basketball and softball and pursue a career in nursing.

Last Tuesday, the Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club was honored to play a few holes with their senior member, Pat Burns, who just celebrated her 104th birthday.

On Thursday, the 18-holers played the game called “Mutt and Jeff’,” in which only the Par 3 and Par 5 holes counted toward the final net score. Cindy Breed took first place with Jane Guiltinan and Dee Sweeney tying for second.

This past week the Port Townsend Women’s Golf Club played the game called Highs and Lows. The winner was Katherine Buchanan. Second place went to Dee Sweeney and third place was a tie between Shelley French and Peggy Tonan.
