AREA SPORTS: Austin Worthington leads Roughriders boys golfers past Kingston

Piper Williams match medalist for 4th straight contest

PORT ANGELES — Austin Worthington went low for the red-hot Port Angeles boys golf team, firing a 1-over-par 37 as the Roughriders earned a close 159-176 win over Kingston in a nine-hole match Monday at Peninsula Golf Club.

Worthington was the low round of the day to earn match medalist honors, but his teammates also came through with solid scores.

Phoenix Flores was two strokes back with a round of 39, Edun Bailey posted a 40 and Nate Anderson shot 43 to round out the Riders’ counting scores. Cale Wentz (44) and Reid Schmidt (47) also played for Port Angeles.

“This week has a couple hurdles for us, and these gents have been putting in the time and effort so that we can hopefully realize our intended goal,” coach Bob Anderson said. “We also intend to keep our heads down and stay focused.”

Piper Williams was match medalist for the fourth straight contest as the Riders’ girls golf team took down a short-handed Buccaneers’ team, 197-281.

Claire Osterberg was next in line with a 49, while Lauryn Chapman posted a 50, which included the team’s first birdie, the par-4 No. 3 hole.

Melena Marquez trimmed 10 shots off her previous best with a round of 53, playing “as well as I’ve ever seen her play,” coach Mike DuPuis said.

The Port Angeles boys and girls are at Bainbridge today.
