Port Townsend Golf course celebrates 94th

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend Golf Course will host a celebration of its 94th anniversary as a continuously-operating public course at an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Players can hit a free round of range balls, participate in putting contests for youth and adults, go on tours of the course and eat catered refreshments provided by Rick Unrue.

The nine-hole course was developed and initially operated as a private club from 1904-to-1927.

The course is located at 1948 Blaine St.

PA Band Booster tourney

PORT ANGELES — The second annual Count to Fore! Golf Tournament, a benefit put on by the Port Angeles High School Band Boosters, will be held at Peninsula Golf Club on Sept. 17.

The four-person scramble format event will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Tickets are $100 per player and fees include 18 holes of golf, golf cart and lunch.

The band boosters are raising funds to send the band to visit Carnegie Hall in New York City in the spring. The band’s traditional trip to Washington, D.C. was canceled in 2021 due to COVID.

Hole sponsors also are sought.

Hays records first ace

SEQUIM — Sequim’s Mark Hays recorded his first hole-in-one during a round at The Cedars at Dungeness.

Hays used his 9-iron to ace the 100-yard fourth hole on Aug. 24.

Peninsula wins again

TUKWILA — Peninsula College remained unbeaten, edging nonleague rival Highline 2-1 in a men’s soccer match on the Thunderbirds’ home turf Wednesday at Starfire Sports Complex.

Inchun Hun converted a penalty kick in the 29th minute and Brian Guzman knocked home a free kick just before halftime to put the Pirates up 2-0.

A Thunderbirds’ goal in the 59th minute halved the lead, but Peninsula’s defense was able to see the game out, limiting Highline to just two other shots..

The Pirates (4-0-0) play Saturday at Everett.

Cavs acquire Mitchell

CLEVELAND — All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell is on his way to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster trade with Utah.

Cleveland sent guard Collin Sexton, forward Lauri Markkanen and rookie guard Ochai Agbaji along with three unprotected first-round picks to the Jazz.

Mitchell averaged 25.9 points per game last season.
