AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Sr. wins on 10th-inning Lincoln Bear home run

PORT ANGELES — The Wilder Senior Baseball Club began its season with a two-game sweep Sunday over Lakeside Legion U18, winning 4-3 on a walk-off two-run home run from Lincoln Bear in the bottom of the 10th in the evening game.

Wilder Sr. won its opening game 6-2 over Lakeside Legion.

Lakeside Legion took a 3-2 lead after scoring a run in the top of the 10th.

Wilder’s Josiah Gooding got on base with a single, then was sacrificed to second base by Jordan Shumway. Bear then belted his two-run shot to win the game.

Other Sequim players were instrumental in the victory. The Sequim trio of Ethan Staples, Zeke Schmadeke and Braydan White struck out 12 batters. White pitched the final two innings, striking out three to earn the win. Schmadeke pitched four innings and allowed no runs and four hits. Staples struck out six in four innings, allowing two earned runs in the second inning.

Gooding finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk. Shumway hit a double and finished 2-for-4. Alex Angevine had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

Neither team made an error in the cleanly played game.

Wilder Senior (2-0), next plays in a four-day Olympic College Invitational beginning Thursday. Wilder Junior (3-0) is scheduled to play in the same invitational.
