AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Sr. battles tough Lakeside squads but gets swept

PORT ANGELES — The Wilder Senior Baseball Club rallied to make the game close against Lakeside Elite on Sunday, but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 6-4 loss.

After a rough doubleheader Saturday against a powerful Lakeside Recovery squad, Wilder Sr. did better against Lakeside Elite, getting eight hits and good pitching from Brayden Hagerty and Elijah Flodstrom. Hagerty took the hard-luck loss, though he allowed only one earned run.

Lakeside Elite got ahead 5-1, but Wilder Sr. kept chipping away at the lead, getting a pair of runs in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Hagerty and a single by Josiah Gooding.

Lakeside Elite went into the seventh up 6-3, but Wilder Sr. rallied again with Flodstrom hitting a double. Tanner Jacobsen went in to pinch run and came in to score on a Gooding single. But with Gooding on first and the tying run at the plate, the game ended on a Brayden White fly out to left field.

Flodstrom was 2-for-4, while Colton Romero and Jordan Shumway hit doubles. Hagerty went five innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Flodstrom went two innings, striking out two.

Wilder Sr. (6-5) played a second game against Lakeside Elite late Sunday. Result of that game will be in Tuesday’s sports section.

Saturday’s games

Though they stayed close with a powerful Lakeside Recovery team for a few innings each game, the Wilder Sr. bats could never get going in a pair of losses 11-1, and 7-1. Wilder Senior had just five hits in the two games combined.

Lakeside Recovery and Lakeside Elite are tough teams based in Issaquah, featuring many players from 3A and 4A high schools.

Flodstrom had two hits during the doubleheader. Hagerty had a hit and an RBI in game one, while Jacobsen had a hit and an RBI in game two.

Despite the lopsided scores, Wilder Sr. hung tough until the later innings. Lakeside Recovery was up just 5-1 entering the fifth inning of the first game as pitcher Blake Sohlberg settled down after a rough start to blank the Issaquah club in the third and fourth innings. Lakeside Recovery finally broke through with some big bombs in the fifth to the outfield fence culminating in a three-run home run over the left-field wall at Civic Field to end the game. Sohlberg ended up allowing four earned runs.

The game saw the return to action for the first time in several weeks by Luke Flodstrom. He broke his hand playing for the Port Angeles Roughriders this spring and hadn’t been able to play since April. He pitched a third of an inning and recorded a strikeout.

In game two against Lakeside Recovery, Wilder Sr. again got some good pitching until the Issaquah team’s big bats finally broke through in the sixth inning for five runs. Wilder Senior went into the top of the fifth tied 1-1.

Conner Bear pitched great in the loss, going five innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Brian Guttormsen pitched two innings in relief, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.
