AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Seniors walk it off

Townsend a home run, Romero a clutch double in 5-4 win

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior came from behind with a big double in the sixth inning by Colton Romero, then walked it off in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the WBS Colts Red squad 5-4 at Volunteer Field on Tuesday.

It was the ninth win in 11 games for Wilder Senior, which has an overall record of 11-10.

It was a back-and-forth game with both teams coming up with huge hits.

Wilder Senior got up early on a single by Braydan White, followed by a two-run home run to right field by DH Ezra Townsend. Townsend just missed a home run by a few feet in a game this weekend at the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker.

Colts Red came back in the fifth inning with three runs on a two-run triple and a single.

Down 3-2 in the sixth, Wilder Senior’s sparkplug and leadoff batter Alex Angevine started yet another rally, getting on base with a single and then stealing second.

Romero then crushed a ball to deep left that went for a double, scoring Angevine from second. Romero came in to score on a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Wilder Senior the lead again at 4-3.

Colts Red tied the game in the top of the eighth on a walk, single and a sac fly.

Wilder Senior got runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t bring anyone home. In the ninth, Landen Olson got on base on an error but was thrown out trying to steal second.

Colts Red was three-up, three-down in the top of the 10th against White, the fourth Wilder Senior pitcher of the game.

In the bottom of the 10th, Wilder Senior loaded the bases without a hit as Colts Red pitching lost its control.

Ethan Staples was hit by a pitch, Nathan Basden walked and Devyn Dearinger was hit by a pitch.

With one out, Luke Flodstrom hit a ground ball to second base. Colts Red got the out at second for a fielder’s choice, but Flodstrom was able to reach first as Staples came in to score the winning run from third.

White earned the victory on the mound, but four Wilder Senior pitchers did an excellent job, allowing eight hits, three walks and four earned runs while striking out eight. Kody Williams went four innings, allowing three hits and struck out three. Staples pitched three innings, allowed one hit and one earned run while striking out three and White went two innings, allowed one hit and struck out two.

Angevine and White each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Basden was 2-for-3.

Wilder Senior will next play Lakeside Legion 18U at the University of Washington at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Wilder Junior (15-12) is playing four games in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Thursday and Friday and then is playing in the Spokane Wooden Bat Tournament on Saturday.

Wilder A (2-8) plays a doubleheader at the Stanwood Cannons today and hosts the Kitsap Rebels Blue at Volunteer Field at 6 p.m. Friday.
