AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Senior completes sweep

Angevine 4-for-4 with a home run

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior’s Alex Angevine had a monster game and the seniors scored seven runs in the fourth inning to crush Lakeside Gray late Sunday for their third win in a row.

The victory completed a sweep over the Grays. Earlier in the day, Wilder Senior beat them 13-1.

Wilder Senior clicked on all cylinders with pitching, defense and hitting in its three victories over Saturday and Sunday. The seniors outscored Lakeside Legion and Lakeside Gray 33-4 and outhit them 31-11 in those games. Even in the seniors’ lone loss, 11-7 to Lakeside Legion early Saturday, they smacked out 12 hits against one of the best American Legion teams in Washington.

The seniors also made a total of three errors in the three wins as their record improved to 16-17 entering the state AAA tournament being held in Port Angeles beginning Friday. They have gone 14-9 since a rough 2-8 start. Wilder Senior is 5-7 in the Region A AAA division. Lakewide Recovery will win the division with a 9-1 record. That lone loss was to Wilder Senior.

Angevine went 4-for-4 in Sunday’s afternoon game with a home run, a solo shot leading off in the first inning, and an RBI double. He finished with four runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. Normally Wilder Senior’s shortstop, he even pitched two innings.

Ethan Staples went 2-for-3, while Ezra Townsend had a hit, two RBIs and a stolen base. Jordan Shumway hit a double, scored two runs, drove in two and stole a base.

Colton Romero pitched three strong innings, allowing two hits and no runs. He struck out two. Braydan White pitched a scoreless inning.

Wilder Senior is getting hot at the perfect time as the state American Legion tournament begins Saturday in Port Angeles. The tournament will go on until July 31 at Civic Field. As the host team, Wilder Senior gets the 7 p.m. slot Saturday, playing Gonzaga Prep, which finished third in the Area 3 Division.
