AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder bounces back for split after being shut out

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior bounced back from a shutout loss in the first half of a doubleheader with first-place Lakeside Recovery, getting a walkoff game-winning single from Gavin Guerrero in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the nightcap 5-4.

The loss was Lakeside’s first loss of the season. Lakeside and Wilder lead the NW Area 1 standings with one loss each, though Lakeside has a two-game lead at 9-1 in league to Wilder’s record of 5-1.

In Game 1, Lakeside’s Brady Liddle pitched a shutout in a 3-0 win, handing Wilder its first loss of the year. Liddle is a pitcher for 4A Issaquah High School.

Wilder’s Brody Merritt and Seth Scofield pitched well in the loss. Merritt went five innings, giving up one earned run, while striking our six and walking four. He took the hard-luck loss. Scofield pitched the final two innings, giving up an earned run on three hits. He struck out one.

Liddle went the distance, holding Wilder to five hits, all singles. Ethan Flodstrom had two of those hits, with Bo Bradow, Milo Whitman and Tyler Bowen adding singles.

In Game 2, Wilder got ahead 4-1 with a four-run second inning. Timmy Adams and Bowen started the rally with singles.

Joel Wood had an RBI single, then Guerrero drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt. Flodstrom smacked an RBI double and Bradow finished the rally by driving Flodstrom in with a single.

Lakeside fought back, scoring runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Timmy Adams started the Wilder rally after he got hit by a pitch. Wyatt Hall laid down a bunt, sending Adams to second while he was able to get on base on an error. Bowen laid down another bunt, sending Adams to third base. Guerrero hit a hard ground ball up the middle and through the infield to drive in Adams with the winning run.

On the mound, Hayden Woods went a solid six innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out 11 and walking only one.

Tyler Bowen pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits, one earned run and striking out two while walking none. Bowen lost the save in the seventh by giving up a run, but pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn the victory for Wilder.

Flodstrom continued his torrid pace at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Out of Flodstrom’s 14 hits (14 for 24) hits, six of them are for extra bases, giving him a slugging percentage of .917. He is hitting .583 on the season.

Guerrero was 1 for 4 with two RBIs, Wood was 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Bradow was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Wilder (7-1, 5-1) is entering a very busy part of its schedule with a doubleheader at Lakeside BR (a different team) in Bellevue on Friday and a doubleheader Sunday in Issaquah against Lakeside.
