SPOKANE — Wilder Jr.’s season came to a close in tough fashion with a 20-2 loss against the Kennewick Phantoms on Tuesday in the American Legion AA State Tournament.
Wilder Jr. went 2-2 at the tournament, making the tournament’s quarterfinals by beating Bellingham 6-2 and Pullman 6-5. Wilder Jr. narrowly lost to the Burlington Sox 7-5 on Monday night before Tuesday’s rough outing.
Timmy Adams, who had an outstanding tournament, did go 3 for 3 against the Phantoms. Wyatt Hall also went 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored, while Lucas Jarnigan was 1-3 with a run and an RBI.
Adams finished the tournament hitting 10-14 for a .714 batting average. Hall hit 6 for 11 (.545), while Jarnigan hit 6 for 14 (.429).
“After the game, I told [Adams] that was one of the best offensive performances of any player I’ve ever coached,” coach Zac Moore said.
Wilder Jr. finishes its season 17-13 overall and with a league championship.
Moore said he was proud of the Wilder Jr. kids and the season they had.
“We were one of the top eight in the state,” Moore said. “I was proud of their work ethic. I really enjoyed this season as a whole.”
In Monday night’s game, Wilder Jr. got into a seesaw affair with Burlington, with the Sox building up leads of 4-1 and 6-3. Wilder Jr. rallied with two runs in the third and two in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as the Wilder kids lost their first game of the state tournament 7-5.
Adams led Wilder Jr. by going 2 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk. Hall was also 2 for 3.
Michael Grubb had a hit and an RBI, while Kamron Meadows had a hit and a run scored. Tanner Lunt scored two runs.
On the mound, Mason Nickovich started the game. Seth Scofield came in for relief and went 3 2/3 innings, giving up just one earned run wthile striking out three and walking three. Seth Woods pitched a scoreless inning and Adam Watkins gave up one hit, one walk and one earned run in an inning.
Crosscutters
The Crosscutters’ season likewise came to a close with an 18-2 loss Tuesday to West Valley in the American Legion A Tournament against West Valley. The Crosscutters also went 2-2 in their tournament with a 4-1 win over Shadle Park and a 6-5 win over Lynden Christian. They lost a close 6-4 game to Eastmont.
West Valley was a powerful team that had 19 runs in two previous wins before playing the Crosscutters.
Logan Olson went 2 for 3 in Tuesday’s game, with a run scored and two stolen bases. Colton Reed and Connor Bear each hit doubles, while Hayden Eaton had a hit, a run scored and two stolen bases.
Wilder Senior is the last team alive at the state tournaments as of press deadline. The seniors played Tuesday night in the AAA Tournament against league foe Lakeside Recovery. For the score of that game, go to www.peninsuladailynews.com.
