AMERICAN LEGION: Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker tourney begins Wednesday

Volunteers needed to man concessions, run scoreboards

PORT ANGELES — This week will see the return of the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker American Legion baseball tournament, with big changes to the tourney.

The tournament will be split into separate seniors and juniors divisions, with both the Wilder Senior and Wilder Junior teams sporting identical 10-4 records. The juniors have been especially hot, sweeping five straight games this weekend at a tournament in Selah.

This year, the juniors tournament will be played at Sequim High School, while the seniors will play at Volunteer Field and Civic Field, with games beginning Wednesday. This is the first time in recent memory games have been played in Sequim.

Wilder Senior coach Zac Moore said volunteers are still needed to help man concession stands and scoreboards.

“We definitely have a need for more people,” Moore said. People who want to volunteer can go to https://signup.com/go/bXwpFur.

A total of eight teams will be at the senior tournament in Port Angeles and seven will be playing in the juniors. All of Wilder Seniors’ game are at Volunteer Field. The seniors open the tournament by playing the WBS Colts Red squad at 4 p.m. Wednesday. They play CBC Orange at 4 p.m. Thursday and Lakeside at 4 p.m. Friday.

Those are all pool games. Elimination games begin Saturday at both Civic and Volunteer. The games begin early Saturday because the Lefties are hosting a game at 6:35 p.m.

Civic games begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and Volunteer Field games begin at 10 a.m. On Sunday, all the games are at Volunteer as the Lefties are playing at Civic Field at 1:35 p.m. Tournament games begin at 10 a.m. with the seniors championship game at 4 p.m.

Wilder Junior will play the WBS Colts White 15U at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sequim High School. The juniors play the Kitsap Ospreys 16U at 9 a.m. Thursday, the WBS Colts Gray 16U at 8 a.m. Friday and Whatcom Post No. 7 AA at 6:30 p.m. Friday, all at Sequim High School. Elimination games will go on from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Sequim High School.

The championship round will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday with the title game at 6 p.m. Moore said the Sequim High School people have been great in helping out the tournament.

It also just so happens there are a lot of Sequim players on Wilder this year, with Hunter Tennell, Duran Ward and Logan Doyle from the Wolves on the juniors squad. The seniors have Sequim’s Zeke Schmadeke, Braydan White, Bryant Laboy, Devyn Dearinger and Ethan Staples on their team.

Wilder A is also in the junior tournament, playing the Broncos at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sequim High School, Whatcom Post No. 7 at 6 p.m. Thursday, Lakeside 15U at 3:30 p.m. Friday and WBS Colts White at 8 a.m. Saturday, with that Saturday game at Volunteer Field.
