AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Wilder Sr. gets off to 4-0 start

Four different pitchers pick up victories

BELLINGHAM — Getting solid pitching and defense and plenty of hitting, the Wilder Senior Baseball Club got off to a fantastic 4-0 start this weekend with a doubleheader sweep over Whatcom Post 7 on Sunday and the Kitsap Osprey on Saturday.

Four different pitchers started and picked up victories. Wilder fielders made just two errors in the four games combined.

Wilder beat Whatcom 7-3 and 7-1. In the opening game, Brayden Hagerty, an Olympic College freshman from South Kitsap High School, started and picked up the win, going five innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Elijah Flodstrom and Brian Guttormsen pitched the final two innings in relief.

Hagerty also had two runs batted in, one coming on a sacrifice fly. Colten Romero was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Josiah Gooding was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Flodstrom was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a sac fly.

In Sunday’s second game, Blake Sohlberg started and picked up the win. He went six innings, allowed four hits and one earned run. He struck out five. Flodstrom pitched the final inning, striking out two and allowing one hit.

At the plate, Alex Angevine was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Flodstrom hit a double, had two RBIs, a run scored and a sac fly.

In Saturday’s doubleheader sweep, Wilder began with a three-hit shutout over the Osprey. Romero was the winner in this one, going five innings and allowing three hits. He struck out six. Blake Merideth pitched a perfect final inning and struck out two.

Angevine went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Romero was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Hagerty was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Brayden White (Sequim High School) hit a triple, scored and run and drove in a run. Jordan Shumway had a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and Kaleb Mullen was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Sohlberg hit a double with a run scored and an RBI, and Ezra Townsend had a double and an RBI.

In Saturday’s second game, Wilder got up big and then had to hold off a Kitsap rally. It was the team’s only seriously close game of the weekend.

Wilder got ahead 6-0, but the Osprey rallied with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it interesting. Wilder slowed down the rally by getting an out at the plate.

Mullen started and picked up the win, going five innings and allowing just one hit. He allowed two earned runs and struck out six. Tate Alton pitched the final two innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts, including one to end the game with a runner on base to pick up the save.

Wilder only had five hits, but was helped by five Osprey errors.

White had a double, a run scored, a walk and a stolen base. Gooding had a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Townsend had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Shumway scored two runs and stole two bases, while Romero had a hit and an RBI.

Wilder next plays at a tournament in Selah on Saturday and Sunday with games against the Columbia Basin RiverDogs, Yakima Valley and Bellingham.
