AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Wilder Jr.’s Sohlberg throws one-hit shutout

LYNDEN — Wilder Junior was swept by the Lynden Lightning on Saturday, but the highlight of this weekend’s action for the team was a one-hit shutout by Blake Sohlberg in a Friday victory against Sedro-Woolley.

Sohlberg pitched the entire game, throwing just 68 pitches in seven innings — 49 of them strikes. The game, which Wilder Jr. won 1-0 in a tight pitchers’ duel, lasted 65 minutes.

Wilder Jr. got the only run of the game in the fourth inning, an unearned run, scored by Nathan Basden.

Sohlberg finished the game with no walks and three strikeouts. Basden finished the game 2-for-3. Alex Angevine was 2-for-3 with a double.

In the first game against Lynden, Wilder Jr. again got good pitching in the first game, falling 3-1 to Lynden. Cole Beeman pitched the entire game, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out three. But Wilder Jr. could only manage three hits — by Basden, Angevine and Jordan Shumway — in the loss.

Wilder Jr. lost 11-5 in Saturday’s late game. The game was knotted up at 5-5 until the bottom of the sixth, when Lynden erupted for six runs.

Wilder Jr. was hurt by six errors as pitchers Rylan Politika and Kaleb Mullen only allowed four earned runs. They combined for eight strikeouts and six walks, and allowed a total of eight hits.

At the plate, Luke Flodstrom was 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases, while Sohlberg was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Angevine had a hit, a run scored and an RBI while Tate Alton had a hit and an RBI.

Wilder Jr. played another doubleheader Sunday against Blaine.
