AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Wilder Jr. off to 3-0 start; Wilder Sr. loses two close ones

BELLEVUE — The Wilder Senior Baseball Club got off to a rough start against a pair of always tough Lakeside teams, while the Wilder Junior team started off the season 3-0.

Two of the games were fairly close for Wilder Senior, which got some good pitching. The seniors, an American Legion AAA team, lost a pair of games to the Lakeside Legion 18U team 12-2 and 4-1 on Saturday. They lost Sunday to Lakeside Recovery Gray 3-2.

The Lakeside teams draw from a lot of 3A and 4A high schools and are often among the best American Legion teams in the state.

The juniors, meanwhile, swept a pair from the Stanwood Cannons 5-2 and 8-3 on Saturday, then beat Sedro-Woolley AA 13-4 on Sunday.

Seniors

In Wilder’s 12-2 loss, Jordan Shumway hit 2-for-3. In the 4-1 loss, Brayden Martin pitched a good game, going five innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs. He struck out five. Rylan Politika pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two.

In the 3-2 loss, Ethan Staples went five innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Alex Angevine pitched an inning and allowed a hit.

At the plate, Josiah Gooding went 2-for-2 with a run and a stolen base. Politika was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base.

Juniors

In the Juniors’ first win, Hunter Stratford pitched six innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven while allowing one earned run. Braedyn Boulden pitched one inning, allowing a hit and an earned run while striking out two.

Easton Fisher hit a double and Carston Seibel had a hit, a run scored and three stolen bases. Kody Williams had a hit and drove in a run.

In the second game against Stanwood, Bubba Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Seibel hit a double, scored a run and drove in two.

On the mound, Rylan Dunn pitched four innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

Owen Leitz pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Brandt Petty pitched an inning and struck out one.

In Sunday’s victory, Fisher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Seibel hit a double, scored a run and drove in one. Perry had a hit, scored a run and drove in two.

Hernandez hit another triple, scored two runs and drove in one. Bryce Deleon had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI.

Williams pitched five innings, allowing three hits and Deleon pitched two innings, striking out three.

Wilder Senior played a home game Monday against Narrows. Result was after press deadline. The juniors next play Friday at Mount Vernon and Saturday at Lynden.
