PORT ANGELES — Teams from all around Washington and British Columbia will descend on Port Angeles this weekend for games over five days at both Volunteer Field and Civic Field as part of the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Tournament.
The tournament is one of the biggest ones in recent history with a full slate of games all day Thursday to Sunday at both fields. It will feature a total of 33 games. The tournament already has a number of volunteers signed up, but Wilder Senior coach Zac Moore said, “we’re always looking for more volunteers.” Anyone interested in volunteering can call Moore at 360-461-2342.
Both Wilder Senior and Wilder Junior will play in the tournament, which begins Wednesday with a pair of games. Wilder Junior takes on the WBS Colts Black at 4:30 p.m. and Wilder Senior playing the WBS Colts White at 7 p.m., with both games at Civic Field.
Wilder Senior will be in the red bracket with Colts White, Lakeside BR and CBC Orange. Wilder Junior will be in the Blue Division with the Shoreline Royals, CBC Green and the Colts Black teams. There will also be a White Division with the Kitsap Osprey, Shoreline Royals Junior, Colts Red and the Langley Blaze out of Langley, B.C.
Wilder Senior coach Zac Moore said Wilder Junior will anchor games at Volunteer Field while Wilder Senior anchors games at Civic Field.
Thursday begins the full slate of games, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at both fields with Wilder Senior playing at 7 p.m. versus CBC Orange and Wilder Junior playing the Shoreline Royals at 4:30 p.m.
Friday games begin at 9 a.m. Wilder Senior will play Lakeside BR at 7 p.m. and Wilder Junior plays at 9 a.m. versus CBC Green.
Saturday and Sunday games will be determined by teams’ seeding with games beginning at 10 a.m. and running to 7 p.m. at both Volunteer and Civic.
On Sunday, the consolation games begin at 9 a.m. at both fields. There will be games at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and championship games at 4:30 p.m.
Both Wilder Senior (6-8) and Wilder Junior (11-7) come in to the tournament hot. Both teams went 3-1 over the weekend, getting outstanding pitching at tournaments in Mount Vernon and Selah. In fact, Wilder Senior’s one loss in Mount Vernon was by the score of 3-2, a game the team could’ve won.
“We’re doing well right now. We’re pitching well and doing better with the bat,” Moore said.
The Wilder Baseball Club is also hosting the state American Legion tournament at Civic Field July 27-31.
Wilder A is not playing in the Firecracker tournament. Wilder A will play in a tournament in Walla Walla beginning Thursday.
