PORT ANGELES — Both Port Angeles and Sequim cleaned up in the all-Olympic League baseball selections with the two schools combining for 13 players on the all-league teams.
Port Angeles, which tied with North Kitsap for the best regular-season record in the Olympic League and earned a trip to the Class 2A state tournament, put six players on the first team — shortstop Alex Angevine, designated hitter Ezra Townsend, outfielder Jordan Shumway, outfielder Nate Basden and starting pitchers Brian Guttormsen and Colton Romero, who also played third base.
Sequim, which qualified for district, won two postseason games and came just one victory short of earning a trip to state, finishing at 12-12. The Wolves had two players named to the first team — infielder Brayden White and pitcher Ethan Staples.
Making the second team for Port Angeles were infielder Josiah Gooding, outfielder Kaleb Mullen and relief pitcher/closer Brayden Martin.
Making the second team for Sequim were utility player Ayden Hollands (first base, third base and catcher) and outfielder Zeke Schmadeke, who was also a solid pitcher for the Wolves.
The Roughriders, who finished 19-7 on the season, had several players with outstanding seasons. Angevine played a solid shortstop defensively and hit .378 for the season with 20 RBIs and 21 runs.
Nate Basden quietly had a spectacular season for Port Angeles, hitting .385 for the season with 14 runs scored and 14 RBIs. Probably his most remarkable stat was having at least one hit in 19 out of the Riders’ 26 games.
Gooding hit .322 with seven doubles, 18 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Shumway hit .318 with 18 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Townsend hit .308 with six doubles and 12 RBIs. Mullen was a clutch hitter who finished the season with 12 runs scored and 15 RBIs.
Romero, Guttormsen and Martin all had great seasons. Romero pitched back-to-back no-hitters, one a complete-game affair and the other a combined no-hitter with Martin. He finished with a 5-1 record, 50 strikeouts in 42 innings and a 3.00 ERA. Playing third base on non-pitching days, he also hit .278 with 14 runs scored and 16 RBIs.
Guttormsen, selected to play in the all-state game, struck out 38 in 35â…“ innings pitched and had an ERA of 1.98. He went 3-0.
Martin, pitching mostly in relief, racked up 33 strikeouts in just 20â…“ innings and had an ERA of 2.03.
Impressive stat totals
Staples struck out 53 batters in 41â…” innings and he also hit .333 with 15 RBIs.
White hit .369 for the Wolves with seven doubles, three triples and 17 RBIs.
Schmadeke batted .338 with 12 RBIs and 10 stolen bases and struck out 38 batters in 37â…“ innings. Holland hit .283 with 11 RBIs.
Winning the sportsmanship award for Port Angeles was Aidan Swenson and Holland for Sequim.
The league MVP was Alex Elton of North Kitsap.
