PORT ANGELES — Registration is open for teams running in the Frosty Moss Relay on Feb. 27.
Because of an Oct. 6 decision by Gov. Jay Inslee, adventure sports such as the Frosty Moss Relay can return. The event is put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports as part of a series with the Big Hurt, the OAT Run, the GOAT Run and the Gravel Unravel series.
The Frosty Moss is an 80-mile relay run from the Sol Duc River to Blyn along the paved Olympic Discovery Trail and the singletrack ODT Adventure Route. There is also a 30-mile “Mini Moss” that begins at Ediz Hook.
To register, teams can go to www.tinyurl.com/frostymoss2021. Spots are limited. The cost is $95 per person for the Frosty Moss and $75 per person for the Mini Moss.
Frosty Moss teams can have between two and five members, while Mini Moss teams can have two to four runners. There are a total of 15 legs in lengths ranging from 2.3 miles to 10.8 miles, with two of the legs north of Lake Crescent having elevation gains of more than 1,300 feet each.
With the COVID-19 guidelines from Inslee, there will be wave starts, which is not a big change for the Frosty Moss as the race already had wave starts. Only five runners will be allowed at hydration stations at one time, which means at exchange zones, only a team’s replacement runner can wait at the station, not the whole team. Teams can stay in their vehicles, however.
Teams are responsible for their own food and beverages and runners are required to wear masks or face coverings any time they are not on the race course. Masks can be removed once a competitor is out running. There will also be no spectators this year.
7 Cedars Resort is hosting the post-race celebration and the event will be able to go past the previous 9 p.m. deadline. The celebration starts at 6 p.m. and there will be cold beer and hot food. Teams can also get “to go” orders if they are not comfortable with indoor dining. The teams’ tables will be socially distanced.

There will be awards for fastest and slowest and most median teams, as well as awards for best exchange zone themes (this year, themes will be music based) and best team costumes.
