BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — Port Angeles’ Dave Lasorsa, a duathlete and triathlete who has competed around the world, finished second in the 65-69 age group in the duathlon and third in the winter triathlon at the USA Triathlon winter triathlon national championships on Feb. 23.
The winter duathlon consisted of a 3K run and a 6K cross-country ski race, while the winter triathlon consisted of a 3K run, 5K fat tire bike race and 5K ski race.
All the events took place on groomed snow. The conditions were cold and sunny, but the 9,300-foot altitude at Breckenridge made for challenging racing, according to Lasorsa, calling the biking on 4-inch tires “especially grueling.”
While most racers opted for “skate style” Nordic skiing, Lasorsa said he was one of the few at the event using a classic style because there are few places on the Olympic Peninsula where he could practice on the wide-smooth surfaces needed for skating.
Lasorsa also competed in the winter nationals in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2022 and 2023 and last year was part of Team USA, competing in the World Winter Triathlon Championships in Skeikampen, Norway. His race results qualified him for next year’s world championships.
He was also 15th in the age 60-64 age group at the Sprint Duathlon World Championship in Odense, Denmark, in 2018 and has competed in the North Olympic Discovery Marathon half-marathon among other events.
