PORT ANGELES — A total of 44 relay teams with clever names, costumes and team vehicles decorated like banana slugs and flamingos took to the Olympic Discovery Trail for the third Frosty Moss Relay this weekend.
Originally scheduled for Feb. 27, the event had to be delayed to Saturday mostly because of a winter mudslide on the Spruce Railroad Trail and the closure of East Beach Road.
The Frosty Moss Relay is an 80-mile team relay race from the Sol Duc Valley to the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal headquarters in Blyn. Teams consisted of two to five people and there was also a Mini Moss 30-mile race from Ediz Hook to Blyn.
The start line and exchange zones were hosted by Back Country Horsemen — Mount Olympus Chapter, YMCA Youth and Government, Nemesis Theater Productions, Port Angeles School District Americorps, Port Angeles High School Key Club, LDS Young Women, U.S. Coast Guard, Back Country Horsemen — Peninsula Chapter, Peninsula Trails Coalition and the Sequim High School Cross Country Team. 7 Cedars Resort was also the title sponsor and provided food for competitors.
The next event in the Peninsula Adventure Sports calendar is the Gravel Unravel Sol Grinder on June 5, a gravel bike race in the hills in and around the Sol Duc Valley. This is the second leg of the three-race Gravel Unravel series.
Frosty Moss 2021 results
Frosty Moss Relay 4 or 5 person team: Frosted Nips, Bainbridge Island, 9 hours, 28:03 seconds.
Frosty Moss Relay 2 or 3 person team: Oatmeal Gang, Sequim, 10:35:10.
Mini Moss Relay team: Vanguard, Lacey, 3:53:39.
Frosty Moss Mediocrity Awards:
Turtle and the Hares, Joint Base Lewis McChord (12th team out of 23 start teams). Subalpine Tees (best group mustaches).
Last Slugs Standing Award (final team to finish): Frosty Flamingos, Seattle, 15:37:43. Best Team Theme/Costumes (Race Directors’ Choice): Run Biddies, Seattle.
Best Exchange Zone (Runners’ Choice): Back Country Horsemen — Peninsula Chapter.
