2A STATE BASKETBALL: Port Angeles girls’ season ends with a 52-40 loss

YAKIMA — The Port Angeles girls basketball team’s season came to an end Friday morning with a 52-40 loss to East Valley of Spokane in the second round of the 2A state tournament at the Yakima SunDome.

Port Angeles was led in scoring by Krista Johnson’s 12 points. Maddy Hinrichs had eight points and four steals, and Bailee Jones finished with six points and eight rebounds. Johnson, Hinrichs and Jones were all playing the final games of their high school careers.

Roughriders freshman Nizhoni Wheeler contributed four points and seven rebounds.

Alex Rankin topped East Valley with 12 points.

YAKIMA — The Port Angles girls stormed back into the game with long-distance shooting, but East Valley went on its own run to lead 42-36 after three quarters.

Krista Johnson drilled two corner 3-pointers to help the Roughriders take a 32-31 lead, but the Knights went on a 9-0 run to again create a cushion before Port Angeles chipped into the lead in the final minutes.

Johnson leads Port Angeles with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers, and Maddy Hinrichs has eight.

YAKIMA — Port Angeles trails East Valley of Spokane 27-19 at halftime.

The Roughriders held the Knights to six points in the second quarter, but only managed four points of their own.

Maddy Hinrichs leads Port Angeles with six points, all coming from two 3-point shots, and Brittany Norberg and Bailee Jones have four each.

Ele Burand and Alex Rankin lead East Valley with eight points apiece.

YAKIMA — East Valley of Spokane leads Port Angeles 21-15 after one quarter in a loser-out game at the 2A girls state basketball tournament at the Yakima SunDome.

Port Angeles has early foul trouble with seniors Maddy Hinrichs and Kylee Jeffers both picking up to in the opening frame.

The Roughriders have stayed in the game with 3 of 4 shooting from 3-point range.

The Neah Bay boys play Pomeroy in the 1B semifinals today at 3:45 p.m. at Spokane Arena.

The Neah Bay girls, after losing to Tekoa-Oakesdale on Thursday, will face Taholah at 12:15 p.m., also at Spokane Arena.
