CHENEY — Crescent coach Darrell Yount called it.
Earlier this week, Yount admitted that Taholah’s Jon Jackson, the defending state champion, was the favorite in the boys javelin going into the Class 1B state track and field meet at Eastern Washington University.
But Yount had confidence in his two javelin throwers, seniors Quenton Wolfer and Travis Walker.
“I’ll be surprised if the winner doesn’t come from Crescent,” Yount said.
Yount was right. Wolfer won the state championship Friday by throwing 170 feet and 6 inches on his last throw, beating Jackson (165-04) by over 5 feet.
Wolfer’s previous best in the javelin was 159-04, which he surpassed by more than 11 feet.
Walker also had a nice showing at state with a 158-04 and garnered him fourth place.
Wolfer also reached the podium in the discus by finishing sixth with a throw of 116 feet. Clallam Bay’s Evan Messinger placed fourth in the event with a 116-07.
Earlier in the day at the 1B meet, Neah Bay’s Elisha Winck took second in the triple jump with a 42-0.25, and Crescent’s Martin Waldrip (35-11) took seventh.
Mansfield’s Macen McLean won the event for the fourth straight year with a 43-03.
In the boys 110-meter hurdles final Saturday, Winck placed sixth with a time of 17.29 seconds. Crescent’s Quinn’Tin March was in third place before hitting the third hurdle and dropping to seventh place with a time of 18.08 seconds.
March, a senior, also placed eighth in the 300 hurdles in with a time of 51.51.
Neah Bay senior Grayson Porter placed fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-06.
Josiah Greene finished 10th for the Red Devils in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 12.29 seconds.
1B Girls
A trio of North Olympic Peninsula athletes earned high finishes in the girls throw events.
Crescent’s Devanie Christie finished her high school career with her second consecutive third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 105-05.
It was the senior’s third top-five state finish in the event, as she was third last year and fifth as a sophomore in 2012.
Neah Bay junior Faye Chartraw improved on her sixth-place state finish in the shot put last year with by taking third Friday with a throw of 33-11.5.
Crescent senior Meghan Shamp earned her second consecutive top-five state finish in the discus with a throw of 93-04 Saturday.
Clallam Bay freshman Molly McCoy took seventh in the girls high jump with a 4-08 and Crescent freshman Ashara Dodson was eighth at 4-04.
Crescent’s Ryan Lester reached the podium in four events, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the girls triple jump with a 30-04.75.
The sophomore took sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.64 seconds and ran a 53.48 in the 300 hurdles finals to grab seventh place.
In the long jump, Lester’s jump of 14-03.75 earned her eighth place.
McCoy fell on place short of reaching the finals in the 300 hurdles, taking ninth with a time of 52 seconds flat.
The Bruins’ 4×100-meter relay also placed ninth in the preliminary race, one spot short of the finals. Marissa May, Mariah Lachester, Inga Erickson and Atokena Abe ran the relay in 56.69 seconds.
