16U SOFTBALL: Kiwanis holds off KONP

Kiwanis wins in 16U softball

PORT ANGELES — Kiwanis’ Maryrose Halberg and KONP’s Heidi Leitz had a pitching duel with 22 total strikeouts, as Kiwanis came out on top 5-2.

Halberg had 10 strikeouts and walked five, while Leitz had 12 strikeouts with three walks.

Both teams scored runs in the first inning. For Kiwanis, Halberg hit a line-drive single to right center. She stole second and third and scored on a fielder’s choice hit to shortstop by Savannah Boulton.

KONP’s Adi Ellis-Bourm walked and scored after base hits from teammates Leitz and Aubrey Hebert.

The next three innings were scoreless. In the top of the fifth, Kiwanis broke it open as Halberg started off the inning with a walk. Lily Thomas and Abby Kimble both got on base on KONP errors. While Leitz struck out the side, all three baserunners were able to come in through aggressive baserunning.

KONP’s Holly Tietjen and Leitz both picked up base hits in the bottom of the fifth, with Leitz driving in Tietjen with an RBI. Halberg ended the threat by striking out two batters and fielding a grounder, then throwing the runner out at first base.

Kiwanis’ Alexis Perry scored a run in the sixth. KONP tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. Hebert and Jordyn Erdmann started the inning with back-to-back walks. Bridgette Weed hit a line drive to shortstop Josephine Edgington, who caught it and stepped on second base for a double play. Halberg ended the inning by catching a pop fly.
