Clallam County just discovered at least $200 it didn’t know it had.
Jefferson County could find at least $450.
Forks might uncover $175; Port Angeles, $200; and Sequim, $75.
The money wasn’t under the rug, in somebody’s desk or in a forgotten file.
It’s been in the state Department of Revenue for at least three years in the Unclaimed Property section.
You, too, could find “free money” with a search of the Revenue Department’s unclaimed property database.
Visit http://ucp.dor.wa.gov and enter your name, last name first.
“People should check there every once in a while,” said Anne Stallard as she counted up what she’d found Thursday.
“Sometimes checks don’t go through and are turned over to the state.”
Stallard is an accountant in the Clallam County Treasurer’s Office.
The database listed five checks of at least $25 and one for at least $75 owed to the county.
In Port Townsend, Kathy Hough, investment officer for the Jefferson County Treasurer, paged through six “hits,” all checks from Bank of America for more than $75.
The database doesn’t list exact amounts.
“Maybe Bank of America sent us checks for taxes and never mailed them,” Hough said.
“They could have been sent to other offices.
“Perhaps they issued a check for taxes and we never received it and they showed it outstanding.”
