PORT ANGELES — A Californian found parked the wrong way on U.S. Highway 101 near Forks in December will pay for the damage he caused when he forced a car off the road and later broke the back window of a State Patrol car.
Kirill S. Chumak, 30, was sentenced Thursday after he pleaded guilty to one count each of driving under the influence, third-degree malicious mischief and hit-and-run on an attended vehicle.
A State Patrol officer arrested Chumak at about 5:30 a.m. Dec. 3 after he was found sitting in his black BMW sedan facing the wrong way on 101 just north of Forks.
No added time in jail
Chumak, who lives in Mountain View, Calif., will have to pay $2,854 in restitution and fines but will not spend any additional time in jail, according to his judgment and sentencing document filed in Clallam County Superior Court.
Chumak was sentenced to 364 days in jail but will get credit for five days served when he initially was arrested and will serve the remaining 359 days as a suspended sentence.
Chumak’s driver’s license will be revoked for a minimum of 90 days.
According to police reports filed in the case, Chumak first came to the attention of the Forks Police Department when a woman driving her pickup truck near the intersection of Highway 101 and LaPush Road reported being forced to drive into the guardrail to avoid a black passenger car driving north in the southbound lane at about 5 a.m. Dec. 3.
The woman was uninjured, according to police accounts, but her truck sustained minor damage while the black sedan continued driving north.
No shoes, socks
A State Patrol officer found Chumak in his black BMW about a half-hour later parked facing north in the southbound lane of Highway 101.
The officer eventually arrested Chumak, who was not wearing any shoes or socks at the time, and placed him in the back of the trooper’s patrol car.
As the trooper was processing the BMW, the trooper heard a loud thumping noise coming from the patrol car and turned in time to see the patrol car’s rear passenger-side window shatter and Chumak’s feet coming out through the opening, according to police accounts.
