PORT ANGELES — A passenger who was riding in a vehicle that was struck by a pickup on state Highway 112 west of Port Angeles on Thursday was listed in stable condition at Harborview Medical Center on Saturday, authorities said.
Gary A. Treider, 66, of Port Angeles was injured when the 2013 Ford Focus he was riding in collided with a 2013 Toyota Tundra driven by David T. Bolewicki, 49, of North Bend, according to a State Patrol memo.
Troopers said Bolewicki failed to yield as he drove from Power Plant Road onto the highway, striking the Ford Focus hatchback driven by Susan C. Treider, 64, also of Port Angeles, in the westbound lane at about 1:18 p.m.
The State Patrol said Bolewicki may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Gary Treider was stabilized at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles before he was transferred, an OMC spokeswoman said.
On Friday, Gary Treider was listed in serious condition in intensive care. By Saturday afternoon, he had been moved out of the intensive care unit and his condition had been upgraded, a Harborview spokeswoman said.
Susan Treider was treated and released from OMC.
Bolewicki was booked into the Clallam County jail for investigation of vehicular assault.
The State Patrol said Bolewicki had a blood alcohol level of 0.022 percent about an hour after the crash, according to the affidavit for probable cause. The legal limit for driving in Washington is 0.08 percent.
Clallam County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney James Kennedy requested a $5,000 bail for Bolewicki in a Friday court hearing.
“His criminal history doesn’t yield too much,” Kennedy said.
“However, the facts of the present case indicate that he was consuming alcohol and possibly marijuana, that he struck another car that had two occupants, one of whom was taken to the hospital with multiple fractures in the torso area.
“I think that alone warrants some bail.”
Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly released Bolewicki on his personal recognizance and ordered him to abstain from drugs or alcohol.
Melly denied Bolewicki’s request for a publicly funded defense attorney based on Bolewicki’s monthly income of $2,800.
“I think you’ve got the capacity to hire an attorney,” Melly told Bolewicki.
The Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will consider filing a formal charge at Bolewicki’s next court hearing at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
