Wooden kayaks on display till today at Fort Worden State Park

PORT TOWNSEND — There is still one more day to explore the world of wooden kayaks during the annual West Coast Wooden Kayak Rendezvous at Fort Worden State Park.

The rendezvous, which began Friday, continues at the beach near the park’s kitchen shelter until about noon today, said organizer Joe Greely of Redfish Kayaks.

Now in its 17th year, past rendezvous have drawn as many as 100 boats, but Greely expected no more than 20 or 30 this year.

Today’s event will begin with a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the kitchen shelter, followed by kayak-building demonstrations.

It will finish with a leisurely group paddle to Point Hudson or Port Townsend (a decision on the destination was still pending Saturday) that will begin at about noon.

“Anyone is welcome to join that,” Greely said.

All are welcome at all activities, which are offered free of charge to “people interested in wooden kayaks, people who want to get into wooden kayaking, who want to build their own or who just enjoy wooden boats,” Greely said.
