TACOMA – Sela Anne Kalama has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for driving drunk into the Elwha River and killing two teenagers March 18.
Kalama, 20, who remains free until her March 7 sentencing, faces 16 to 36 months in prison for the deaths of Ronnie L. Scroggins, 15, of Neah Bay, and Vanna K. Francis, 17, of Port Angeles.
She is a member of the Quinault tribe. Scroggins was a member of the Makah tribe of Neah Bay, and Francis was a member of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe of Port Angeles.
Because the deaths occurred on the Lower Elwha reservation, the incident brought federal charges filed in U.S. District Court in Tacoma.
Kalama had pleaded not guilty to the two counts April 27, but changed her plea to guilty Tuesday.
