A Washington State Patrol trooper examines Port Townsend resident Mildred L. Northup’s 2005 Jeep Liberty, which was driven off the road about 1:35 p.m. Tuesday into a ditch after Northup apparently suffered a heart attack.
She was airlifted from the scene at state Highway 20 and Eaglemount Road to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she died, the State Patrol said.
No one else was injured in the crash in which the southbound vehicle left the road to the right, struck a guardrail, crossed the lane and left the road to the left.
The vehicle came to rest about 90 feet off the road facing south.
Traffic in both directions was slowed to alternating one-way travel for more than an hour while East Jefferson Fire-Rescue paramedics attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Northup.
