PORT TOWNSEND — Community volunteer Macy Galbreath has been named the 2014 Woman of Excellence by the Port Townsend branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW.

Each year, the AAUW branch presents the award to a Jefferson County woman who has made significant contributions by being a role model, change agent, teacher/mentor and community volunteer.

Galbreath has held every major leadership position within AAUW and initiated the idea for the group’s annual Kitchen Tour, which raises funds for AAUW community projects, the AAUW said.

She was described as a natural leader who is the first one there with her sleeves rolled up and ready to help.

“Galbreath doesn’t just want to help; she comes with ideas in hand and is willing to take charge and lead the way,” according to one of her sponsors for the award.

She was one of the first volunteers to work with students through the AAUW-sponsored Phonics Program at Chimacum Elementary School and chaired the program for several years.

Galbreath also was one of the first to volunteer to chair the gala of Centrum, and she continued to serve on the organizing committee.

Local women received assistance through her five years as a member of the Fashion Show Committee for Working Image.

She also has had a long involvement in the Port Townsend Yacht Club and is the commodore-elect.
