PORT ANGELES — A 25-year-old woman died Saturday evening, hours after being injured in a two-car collision that temporarily shut down U.S. Highway 101 east of Port Angeles.
The crash marks the first fatality on North Olympic Peninsula roads this year, following an unusually high number of fatal collisions in the area in 2004.
Roxanne C. Ennis of Port Angeles died about 8 p.m. at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she had been airlifted following the crash, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The driver of the 1986 Honda Civic in which Ennis was riding, 24-year-old Jeffery R. Spiker of Port Angeles, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Olympic Medical Center.
Neither Ennis nor Spiker was wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol.
The crash did not injure driver Ronald D. Becker, 52, nor passenger Vicki L. Becker, 53, both of Port Angeles, whose 1994 Chevrolet Blazer collided with the Honda.
The Beckers both were wearing seat belts.
According to the State Patrol, Spiker at 4:55 p.m. attempted to cross the two-lane Highway 101 into a private driveway from the parking lot of Midway Metals, at milepost 258 just west of Barr Road.
The small Honda was carrying a washing machine in the back seat.
