Will it snow enough to launch a Hurricane Ridge ski season?

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow . . . please!

About six to eight inches of new snow is expected at Hurricane Ridge by Sunday — but a lot more is needed before the rope tows for downhill skiing and snowboarding are opened.

The Ridge needs at least a 48-inch snow base before the tows can be cranked — and even more for the Poma lift.

Thursday’s measurement was 28 inches, with a few snowflakes falling.

But while there’s too little snow for downhill action, there may be enough for cross-county skiers, sledders and innertube riders.

Unless closed by weather, the road to the Ridge will be open today through Sunday.

Call the 24-hour Olympic National Park Road and Weather Info Line — 360-565-3131 — or tune to 530 AM radio in Port Angeles to make sure the road is open (snow tires are mandatory, and don’t forget to load your car with chains, blankets, shovel and emergency kit).

The Info Line should also report on whether the two tubing areas are open (they close if there’s ice).

The Ridge road is normally closed Monday through Thursday. It will be open on two Monday holidays in 2005 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 17 and Presidents Day, Feb. 21.)
