Once the excitement of the holidays has passed, there’s one last chore to accomplish: getting rid of the Christmas tree.
Jefferson County residents have at least two options.
If the tree has not been sprayed with fake frost and is naked of all ornaments and tinsel, the Port Townsend Biosolids and Compost Facility will accept it free of charge.
The trees will be mulched by the giant wood chipper on site.
“If they have anything but the bare tree, it’s garbage,” said Ken Duagaard, Jefferson County Solid Waste equipment manager.
“If it’s a clean tree, it’s yard waste.”
If trees have been sprayed with canned frost or otherwise tarnished, they can be brought to Jefferson County Solid Waste for a $4.95 minimum charge for up to 80 pounds.
Jefferson County Solid Waste is at 325 Landfill Road, off Jacob Miller Road.
The compost facility is on the same lot.
The hours for both are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Another option for Port Townsend residents who use D.M. Disposal Service is to place their clean trees in front of their homes for yard debris pick-up.
If the trees are taller than four feet, they must be cut in half.
They should also be bundled with twine so they take up less room.
Yard debris pick-up will be one day later than the regular schedule because of the New Year’s Day holiday.
