A fish culvert construction project that will close state Highway 112 for six weeks could be postponed until after Labor Day.
John Hart, project engineer for the state Department of Transportation, said DOT officials will meet with the project contractor, Bruch and Bruch, on Friday in Forks to discuss delaying the project’s start date from Aug. 16 — during the tourist season — until Sept. 7, and working longer shifts six days a week, Hart said.
“Starting after Labor Day might cost $150,000 extra, but maybe we can get it,” Hart said.
“We want to get the details before we say we can fund it — but we think we can.”
Delaying the work, which would sever the highway between U.S. 101 and the Clallam Bay-Sekiu-Neah Bay recreation areas, would put the project past the high season for motels, restaurants and other attractions.
