FORKS — In other parts of Western Washington it rains “cats and dogs.”
Here, it rains fish carcasses.
More than 15,000 pounds of salmon carcasses were dropped from a helicopter bucket into the upper reaches of the Calawah and Bogachiel rivers and their tributaries last week.
And thousands of pounds of more fish will be flown into remote areas of the Sol Duc River this week.
“We’re going to have another drop Tuesday or Wednesday,” Pacific Salmon Coalition volunteer Wayne Haag said Saturday. “The helicopter drop really works slick.”
The Pacific Salmon Coalition chartered a helicopter from Eagle Air Helicopters, Inc. of Forks for the fish drops.
Over the course of several helicopter drops and truck runs, more than 125,000 pounds of salmon carcasses will be put in West End river systems, he said.
