FORKS — Wednesday is U.S. Coast Guard Quillayute River Station Appreciation Day in Forks.
The ceremonies come during troubled times for the Coast Guard — the Quillayute River station may be closed, and Coast Guardsmen nationwide struggle with stress, poor training and budget shortages.
It’s also been a time of glory, with two cutters based on the North Olympic Peninsula credited with the seizure of record amounts of cocaine.
Forks Mayor Phil Arbeiter proclaimed the appreciation day in a special city resolution.
“I ask every member of the community to express their appreciation to these fine men and women currently serving their country and living in our community,” it said.
A Coast Guard Appreciation luncheon will be held by the Forks Chamber of Commerce.
The public is invited. Special guests will include personnel from the Quillayute River search and rescue station, located in nearby LaPush.
