NEAH BAY — AquaEnergy Group Ltd. has moored its first buoy in an experimental wave energy system being developed off Waatch Point.
If successful, the system will harness tidal energy and produce electricity that can be sold into the commercial power grid.
The company wants to produce a minimum of 1 megawatt of power in the pilot project.
That’s enough electricity to serve 150 homes, according to Alla Weinstein, president of Mercer Island-based AquaEnergy Group Ltd.
“On Oct. 28, we installed oceanographic measurement equipment, including a buoy that will collect wave energy data for the next three months,” she said, noting Makah tribal members assisted with placement.
