West End: Campers rescued from rising tide

LAPUSH — Coast Guard personnel and other law enforcement authorities rescued two campers Sunday afternoon at Third Beach after they were trapped by the fast-moving waters of a rising tide.

Wendy Beardslee, 46, of Blaine, was airlifted from Third Beach by a Coast Guard Group Port Angeles rescue helicopter to Coast Guard Station Quillayute River in LaPush.

Beardslee was then taken to Forks Community Hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and bumps and bruises, said 1st Class Boatswain’s Mate Mark Baumgartner, U.S. Coast Guard Station Quillayute River.

The identity of the second camper was not know late Sunday night.

She was rescued at the beach and brought to a waiting ambulance at the trailhead, and she was treated at the scene, Baumgartner said.

Clallam County dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call on the incident from a person in Three Rivers at about 4:12 p.m. Sunday, Baumgartner said.

The two women were camped out at Third Beach and hiked to a tidepool at low tide, he said.

“Then the tide came in, and they found themselves stranded on part of the beach by the rising tide,” Baumgartner said.
