FORKS — Seven people, stranded overnight on a small, wooded island in the middle of Sol Duc River, were taken to safety by a Sequim-based rescue team Monday morning.
The five adults and two children, all from the Puget Sound area, became stranded Sunday on the river bar during a day hike.
Eight visitors waded onto the bar across 18 inches of water.
The names of those rescued were not released.
Fed by heavy rains in the Olympic Mountains, the river quickly swelled to six feet of swiftly moving water.
The island is located about 1½ mile upstream from the confluence of the Sol Duc and Quillayute rivers, about six miles west of Forks.
One member of the group was able to swim to shore and called 9-1-1 for help about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
