BEAVER — A Vancouver, Wash., man and two relatives were OK Sunday after their fishing boat capsized on the Sol Duc River near Maxfield Road.
Newton Betts was fishing in a 16-foot aluminum boat with his father and daughter-in-law about two miles above Maxfield when the boat became wedged between two rocks south of the Loop Tavern.
“I went around one rock and hit another one. The boat got wedged in between them,” Betts said.
The boat could be seen with its port side in the air and the bow high, and its stern pointed to shore, Betts said.
Betts said everyone made it ashore safely, despite the strong current between the boat and the shore. He was able to contact rescuers on his cellular telephone, which survived the capsizing in his pocket.
“Everybody’s fine,” he said Sunday evening.
