Quilcene School District officials have put out the “welcome mat” to Brinnon middle school students to play sports on Ranger teams.
The offer goes into effect as early as the fall girls volleyball season.
Brinnon will have about 20 students in grades 6-8 that will be eligible to make the teams, Superintendent Bob Garrison said.
The deal was struck Thursday during an afternoon joint session of the Quilcene and Brinnon school boards.
Quilcene Superintendent David Andersen said he would inform the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association that Brinnon students would be playing on their teams.
Brinnon, a kindergarten through grade 8 school, does not have athletic teams.
“All we need is the welcome mat, and we’ll worry about getting things together,” Brinnon School Board President Bob Mollerus said.
“The welcome mat is out,” his Quilcene counterpart, board President Lorna Ward, responded.
Other discussions
Aside from athletics, the two cash-sensitive boards discussed topics ranging from aligning curriculums to sharing lawn mowers.
In the latter issue, the Brinnon School District could be facing several thousand dollars to replace a commercial mower that just quit, Mollerus said.
Quilcene, on the other hand, bought a new mower a few years ago, Ward said.
