Welcome Celebration to open fall’s Studium Generale

PORT ANGELES — Studium Generale will open its fall quarter series with the traditional Welcome Celebration today.

The ceremony is a partnership among the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and Peninsula College.

It will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Zoom. To join the Zoom meeting, go to https://pencol-edu.zoom.us/j/ 82027861421. The meeting ID is 820 2786 1421.

The annual Welcome was founded in 2016 by Lola Moses of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Moses is running for the Port Angeles School Board on Nov. 2. In the past, the ceremony has featured language, culture, arts and education.

A presentation on Tribal Sovereignty is planned by Gina Steiner, managing attorney for the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, of which she is an enrolled member.

Steiner has served as managing attorney since 2007. She oversees four in-house attorneys, one support staff member and four contracts with external legal counsel; she is a part of the executive team which reports directly to the tribe’s elected officials; and she manages the tribe’s legal department budget. She has authored two chapters, one in each of the following: The Strong People and Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula — Who We Are.

She thinks her most “significant accomplishment has been helping her tribe place approximately 500 acres in Trust Status with the Department of Interior.”

She served as a board member for Leadership Kitsap from 2017-21.
