FORKS — The last West End Thunder races of the season are Saturday and Sunday.
Gates open at 9 a.m., with races starting at 10 a.m. at Forks Municipal Airport, just off U.S. Highway 101, and running until about 5 p.m.
A show-and-shine car and motorcycle show also is planned, as well as “nostalgia top-fuel funny cars and top-fuel dragsters,” according to the West End Thunder website at www.westendthunder.com.
The fee to enter cars in the races is $35.
Admission is $15 for those showing cars or motorcycles
Spectators 13 and older pay $10 each. Children 12 and younger get in free.
Since 2006
West End Thunder club has conducted drag races at the airport since 2006.
This summer, it hosted races July 6-7 and Aug. 17-18.
The city had to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to close the landing strip to aircraft for race weekends because an FAA policy prohibits airports with grant obligations from closing for non-aviation uses.
The most recent approval was received in February.
It allows the city to close the airport for the races on specified weekends during the summer for five years.
The city must reapply for events beyond 2017.
