WEEKEND: Well-traveled folk duo to perform in Coyle this Saturday

COYLE — Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer explore the world on a variety of planes.

McGraw spent a decade as a wildlife biologist, working in Mexico, the Grand Canyon and beyond, while Fer logged some time in Spain, studying music and local culture.

The two are also songwriters who have built a music career on those travels, funneling everything — characters they met, sounds they heard, stories they learned — into their mix.

Next stop for the pair: the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center for another in the Concerts in the Woods series this Saturday.

Admission is by donation, and all ages are welcome for this night of folk songs and rootsy Americana, to get started at 7:30 p.m.

As always with these concerts, complimentary coffee and cookies are served at intermission.

Last evening show

McGraw’s and Fer’s gig, however, will be the last evening show at the community center for a while, as Concerts in the Woods host Norm Johnson is switching to afternoon matinees Saturdays or Sundays through the winter.

McGraw and Fer are fresh off a tour of Europe, where their new album, “Maritime,” was voted No. 1 in August and September by media critics for the EuroAmericana chart, noted Johnson.

“When I first listened to their song samples, I was struck by the images in their lyrics [and] the beautifully blended harmonies,” he said.

With McGraw’s baritone and Fer’s clear voice and electric guitar, their music “is immediately identifiable as their own sound.”
