WEEKEND: Valentine’s Day dance set at Sequim Prairie Grange this Saturday

SEQUIM — An afternoon of live music plus an old-fashioned Valentine’s Day dance are coming to the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road, this Saturday, and all ages are welcome.

The Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association, host of these events, is bringing in two well-known guests from Seattle: champion fiddler Vivian Williams and her husband, Phil Williams.

The couple will give a free performance at 1:30 p.m. along with the Dungeness All Star Band, all of whom plan to get people clapping their hands, stomping their feet and even taking a spin on the dance floor.

Then comes the Saturday night dance. For this party, Juanita Ramsey-Jevne will teach basic dance steps at 6:30 p.m.

The dance, with Ramsey-Jevne calling and Vivian, Phil and the All Star Band playing, will go from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Admission Saturday evening will be a suggested $5 donation, while guests 16 and younger will get in free for the contra and square dances, polkas, schottisches, two-steps, waltzes and other styles.

Old Time Fiddlers media coordinator Frank Figg noted that this is an opportunity to see Vivian, winner of many fiddle contests across North America, beside Phil, who plays guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass and just about anything else with strings on it.

Vivian and Phil grew up doing the traditional pioneer and contemporary dances, and have been playing for dancers for the past 50 years or so.

The couple also helped found the Seattle Folklore Society, the Northwest Folklife Festival and the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association.
