PORT TOWNSEND — Harpist David Michael will join a pair of visiting musicians Saturday night at the Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center, 3918 San Juan Ave., for his only formal concert this year.
The event, “Two Harps and a Guitar,” has Michael playing his Celtic harp, Ruth Beck taking a sparse, percussive approach to the same instrument and guitarist Michael Mandrell adding his strings.
The music will start at 7:30 p.m., with admission on a sliding scale of $10 to $20 and a portion of proceeds benefiting Unity of Port Townsend.
Both Michael and Mandrell find inspiration while hiking the wilderness of the Northwest. When they make music together, “an especially sweet blend emerges,” Michael says, as their sound reflects “the pulse of nature and the wild spirit.”
Beck is joining the two for her Port Townsend debut. A singer-songwriter as well as a harpist, Beck toured the country with Mandrell earlier this year.
Michael is known in Port Townsend and beyond for two dozen CDs of original music on his independent Purnima label, including the newest, “Above the Clouds,” which will be available at Saturday’s concert.
A multi-instrumentalist, Michael has been playing stringed instruments for more 55 years. He’s author of Busker: Tales of a Renegade Harpist, a memoir of his travels from Washington state’s ferries to the streets of Scandinavia.
