WEEKEND: Trio of races to sprint across Quilcene area

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Oyster Half-Marathon, a 10K Salmon Run and a 5K Ranger Run will offer views of farms, forests and sea Saturday.

All three races will begin at 9 a.m. The start and finish line is at Worthington Park next to the Quilcene Museum, near the Linger Longer Outdoor Theater, at 151 E. Columbia St. at Center Road.

Registration can be done at www.quilcenehalfmarathon.com or at the starting line on the day of the race, when registration opens at 7 am.

Late registration

Late registration is $70 in the Oyster Half Marathon, $50 for adults and $45 for those 18 and younger in the Salmon Run, and $35 for adults and $30 for those 18 and younger in the Ranger Run.

Also Saturday will be a free run for children 9 and younger, the Jefferson Healthcare Kid’s Sprint.

In the Kid’s Sprint, heats are planned for runners in age groups of 7 to 9, between 4 and 6, and 3 and younger.

Registration is Saturday morning, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Worthington Park.

The race will begin at about 9:30 a.m. after the start of the Quilcene Half-Marathon run.

Racing isn’t all there is to the day.

Other events

Special events include music at the amphitheater, a beer garden and wine-tasting and cheese sampling, as well as prizes for those who are tops in their categories.

Those who are pre-registered can pick up packets between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. today or after 7 a.m. Saturday at Worthington Park.

The races, for both runners and walkers, are organized by the Quilcene Marathon Association, which consists of Tom Brotherton, Jim Hodgson, Jane Storm and Rebecca Krajewski.

The courses wind through forests and farmland overlooking Quilcene Bay.

Three routes

All three routes cross the Little Quilcene River and pass by the tidewaters where Quilcene oysters grow.

Both the Quilcene Oyster Half-Marathon race and the Salmon Run 10k are certified by USA Track & Field.

The Half-Marathon course covers 13.09 miles.

The Salmon Run 10K course covers is 6.17 miles and features views of Quilcene Bay as well as farms and woods.

The Ranger Run 5K is 3.11 miles along Quilcene Bay.

Water stations, portable toilets and aid stations are planned along the courses.
