Drag races, a sail-in and a car contest are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

FORKS

Drag races

FORKS — The summer’s second edition of West End Thunder Drag Races is this weekend.

The races are the third weekend of each month through September at Forks Municipal Airport on South Forks Avenue.

Along with one-eighth-mile drags will be classic cars, a Show ‘n’ Shine and food vendors. The races are alcohol-free.

The public will be admitted beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The tech entry will be at 7 a.m.

General admission will be $10, with children younger than 12 admitted free.

Entry fee for the race is $35 and $15 for the Show ‘n’ Shine.

Drag races also are planned Aug. 20-21 and Sept. 17-18.

Auto contest, challenge

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Auto Center will host a car contest today and Saturday with a chance to win $250 and enjoy a free barbecue cookout.

The public is invited to the auto center, U.S. Highway 101 and Deer Park Road, for the contest from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

Contests will be for highest mileage vehicle, people’s choice best-looking tough truck or Jeep, people’s choice ugliest vehicle and people’s choice modified or sport car.

The first 100 people to enter a challenge — new SUV (CRV vs. Rogue vs. RAV4 vs. Cherokee), new car (Camry vs. Altima vs. Accord) and new truck (Ram vs. Titan vs. Tundra) — will receive a $20 gas card.

Walk in the garden

PORT ANGELES — The public is invited to Walks in the Garden from noon to 1 p.m. today at the Fifth Street Community Garden.

The educational walks are held at the garden, 328 E. Fifth St.

Downtown garage sale

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Downtown Association will host a garage sale at Country Aire Natural Foods from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and a clearance sale from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The sale will take place in the Country Aire basement, 200 W. First St.

Access will be through the basement door in the back of the store adjacent to the Country Aire parking lot.

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of Christmas lights for downtown Port Angeles and materials to create a new Halloween photo backdrop as part of the annual Downtown Trick or Treat.

Splash Bash

PORT ANGELES — William Shore Memorial Pool will host a Splash Bash from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Entry will be $5.25 per participant; $10.50 for nondistrict residents.

The pool at 225 E. Fifth St. will have games, prizes and music for a party.

Book signing

PORT ANGELES — Award-winning author E.C. Murray will sign copies of her book A Long Way from Paris at Odyssey Bookshop, 114 W. Front St., from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

A Long Way from Paris is described as “an adventure, a love tale and a travelogue,” with high acclaim from Publishers Weekly, named a Kirkus Best Book and chosen as a Seattle Times “New and Noteworthy” pick.

Murray teaches writing at Seattle Central College and is from the south Sound area.

Adult rowing classes

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association will offer an adult beginners class starting Saturday.

The class will be on six consecutive Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at 1431 Ediz Hook Road next to the Paddle Park on Ediz Hook.

Classes are $60.

The instructor is Debby Swinford.

Makeup days will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings.

CD release concert

SEQUIM — Performing artist Kate Powers will perform a CD release concert at 7 tonight at Calvary Chapel Sequim.

Powers will perform on fiddle and David Rivers on guitar at the chapel, 91 Boyce Road.

The concert is free, but a $10 donation is suggested.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at 10 a.m. today.

The discussion at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will be about “Korean choices.”

The question is if reunification between North and South Korea is possible or desirable.

Auditions for ‘Skylight’

SEQUIM — Auditions for the Olympic Theatre Arts production of the Tony award-winning play “Skylight” will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Three roles are available.

Those auditioning will be required to read from scenes in the play, which will be provided at the audition.

Scripts are available for review from the OTA business office Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Those unable to attend the Saturday audition can phone or text the director Angela Poynter at 360-477-6250 to set up an alternate audition time.

Rehearsals for “Skylight” begin July 25.

VFW veteran benefit

SEQUIM — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will host a benefit for veterans at Post 4760, 169 E. Washington St., from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Loaded baked potatoes will be sold for $5 along with bottled water or soda for $1.

The public is welcome.

Proceeds will go to the VFW to help fund veteran support programs, including Veterans Relief and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Local author Lisa Preston will be on site with her latest book, The Ultimate Guide to Horse Feed, Supplements and Nutrition.

Guild thrift shop open

SEQUIM — The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Summer clothing, handbags, jewelry, dishware, appliances and furniture are available at the shop, 204 W. Bell St.

Also for sale are books, puzzles, shoes and fine glassware. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price.

Volunteers and consigners always are needed.

The guild donates proceeds to health care providers and first responders.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive.

Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

Grange hosts dance

SEQUIM — Buck Ellard will perform from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall.

Admission is $10 per person or $15 a couple at the grange hall at 290 Macleay Road.

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer a discounted open swim from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Everyone is invited to swim for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

The whole pool will be dedicated to play. Noodles, rings and other floating toys will be available. No lap lanes will be offered.

Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Waterfront tours

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will host free waterfront boat tours today.

During the free 30-minute boat ride on the center’s motor launch, visitors can see the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend from the water.

Tours will leave on the hour and half-hour from the center’s dock, 431 Water St.

The launch will accommodate six to eight people in each tour — first-come, first-served.

Donations will be accepted.

PORT TOWNSEND — Conversation Cafe will meet today in Port Townsend.

Conversation Cafe meets at 11:45 a.m. every Friday at Alchemy Restaurant at Taylor and Washington streets.

Bird-watching trip

PORT TOWNSEND — The Admiralty Audubon Society will host a bird-watching field trip along the spit between Kilisut Harbor and Port Townsend Bay from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Participants will meet at Fort Flagler, 10541 Flagler Road, Nordland, in the campground parking lot.

The field trip is free, but a Discover Pass is needed to enter the park.

To reach the meeting place, after entering Fort Flagler, drive to the four-way stop, turn left onto Campground Road and follow it to the end to the parking lot across from the RV campground.

Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, spotting scope and field guides, and to dress comfortably with a hat and hiking shoes.

Pilothouse simulator

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will open its pilothouse simulator to the public from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The pilothouse simulator at the center, 431 Water St., allows users to take the wheel of a virtual Coast Guard cutter, navigating through waves, darkness and other boat traffic.

PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to bring children to see what urchins, anemones, sea stars and hermit crabs eat at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Boiler Room and Church of Merrymaking will present the Bodacious Biscuit Groovy Gravy Volunteer/Community FUNraiser Feel Good Fest at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The feast will include vegan rosemary garlic biscuits slathered in a savory vegan coconut mushroom gravy with a steamed medley of local greens and root vegetables. A fresh fruit mountain will top it all off.

The fundraiser will take place at the Boiler Room, 711 Water St.

Besides performances and food, an open poetry slam and open-mic session will start at noon.

Family concert

BRINNON — Lobo Del Mar will perform at Music on the Patio at Pleasant Harbor Marina Resort from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Lobo Del Mar is a family whose members perform as a Celtic band and dance troupe. Throughout the years, the family has traveled the globe, experiencing dozens of cultures and absorbing their influences along the way, according to a news release.
