SEQUIM — Superheroes will abound at the Sequim Relay For Life from 6 p.m. tonight through 8 a.m. Saturday at the track at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
From the evening and into the night — and fighting on until morning — Sequim’s superheroes will battle cancer wherever it is found, said Marie Meyers, chairwoman of the Sequim Relay For Life.
“Our superheroes are right here in our community. They are our survivors,” Meyers said.
All participants and visitors are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero costumes, both during games and laps around the track, she said.
Proceeds from Relay For Life go to the American Cancer Society.
At 5:30 p.m., before the event begins, participants will gather for a group bird’s-eye photo in which they will use their bodies to spell out the word “hope.”
Superhero Lap
The 6 p.m. Survivor Lap — this year known as the Superhero Lap — will be a very special event this year and will include caregivers.
“That’s also a tough job,” Meyers said.
She said caregivers will walk the lap but start separately from the cancer survivors.
“They will come together in the middle and end together,” she said.
Live music by the Buck Ellard band and Simonson Family Band, games — including a three-legged race, potato sack race and glow-in-the-dark pingpong — and a silent auction are planned during the nighttime hours.
A 6 a.m. Zumba session will help wake up participants.
“It’s a good reason for teens and 20-somethings to stay up all night,” Meyers said.
A duct tape and newspaper fashion show is planned at 7 a.m. just before the closing ceremony that begins at 7:30 a.m.
Clallam County Fair royalty will be at the relay to greet participants.
19 teams
As of Wednesday, the Sequim Relay For Life had 19 registered teams and 144 registered participants.
Teams had raised $12,487.20 through direct donations, car washes, yard sales and online fundraising activities.
Registration is $10 and will be open for new participants at the event, Meyers said.
Relay For Live participant T-shirts will be available for late registrations on a first-come, first served basis, she said.
Volunteers for the Sequim Relay For Life will wrap up the fundraising season with a Relay Garage Sale on Aug. 23 at 92 Robbins Road.
The Sequim Relay For Life is the final event of the season on the North Olympic Peninsula.
The Port Angeles relay took place June 7-8. The Port Townsend relay was July 27-28. The Forks Relay For Life was Aug. 1-2.
