SEQUIM — Shades of rose, red and violet will flow onto silk in a free art-making demonstration at the Museum & Arts Center this Saturday.
Renne Brock-Richmond, founder of the North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival and an instructor of multimedia art classes at Peninsula College, will demonstrate the art of painting on silk from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum, 175 W. Cedar St., and all community members are invited.
“There will be bright hues,” promised the artist, who’s known for adding jewel tones to silk scarves —and for sporting her ruby-red raincoat and rain boots around Sequim and Port Angeles.
Besides watching Brock-Richmond’s demos, visitors can see the wide-ranging fiber art show on display at the museum through November.
The show, titled “Strong Stitches,” brings together quilts and woven, knitted and crocheted works by 40 artists from across the Peninsula and the Pacific Northwest. Brock-Richmond, who curated the show, is eager to answer questions about the exhibition and how to participate in it.
As for Saturday’s demonstration, Brock-Richmond will explain how visitors can try silk painting at home, or if there’s enough interest, sign up for future classes.
Painting on textiles is more complex than it looks, she said, but it’s a form of self-expression she has enjoyed since she was a girl.
