WEEKEND: Sequim celebrates centennial with party, dance and art walk tonight (Friday)

SEQUIM — Tonight’s First Friday Art Walk in downtown Sequim coincides with a long-planned-for party: the Sequim Centennial Community Photo and Street Dance.

Local residents are invited to gather at the Sequim Avenue-Washington Street intersection at 5:30 p.m. today for the giant photo; then comes the dance with the Magic Bus rock ’n’ roll band, the Guy Johnson Band, food vendors and a beer and wine garden.

The Street Dance will go from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sequim Avenue while the Art Walk, also a free event, happens today from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. And like every month’s Art Walk, it has a color theme: purple. That means people are invited to dress or accessorize in any shade of it, from lavender to deep violet, as they visit the art venues. Some of the galleries and shops serve refreshments and live music tonight; here is a sampling.

■ Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., offers wine tasting, art by Lee Oskar and Henning Erben and live music by a full slate of players: Bill Volmut, the Toot Sweet clarinets and the duo of Taylor Ackley and Chuck Easton. Stop by Wind Rose for the live-music schedule.

■ Doodlebugs, 138 W. Washington St., has “happy hour” for crafters from 4:30 p.m. till 6:30 p.m.; bottle-cap charms are this week’s project and everybody’s invited to drop in and make some.

■ Phil Tauran Photography Studio & Gallery is among the newer Art Walk stops at 155-B W. Cedar St.

■ Rainshadow Coffee Co., 157 W. Cedar St., features Mary Tulin and Mike Saunders singing and playing Celtic folk music.

■ Pacific Mist Books, 121 W. Washington St., has artwork by JWyatt Art and chocolate tastings from We Do Fine Fudge.

■ Clear Image Sequim, 518 N. Sequim Ave., celebrates its first anniversary with a display of Randall Tomaras’ lavender prints.

■ The Blue Whole Gallery is hosting a Sequim Centennial display of historical photographs and fine art at 129 W. Washington St.

■ The Museum & Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., has the Northwest Collage Society’s summer exhibition of collages by artists from across the region.

■ R&T Crystals and Beads, 158 E. Bell St., has jewelry demonstrations by Paulette Hill and Gail McLain.

■ The LARC Gallery, 166 E. Bell St., stands for Local Artists’ Resource Center, so the venue showcases art by Shirley Mercer, Mary Leone, Jim Watson-Gove, Sunny Benham, Donna Standerwick, Dee Green, Irene Loghry, Bettye Tabain.

It also displays work by Diana Miller, Barbara Van Vorst, Jeanne Engesath, Jim Gift, Karen Rozbicki Stringer, Janet Beers, LeRoy Beers, Jan Canale, Maryann Proctor, Jack Parcell, Linda Parcell, Pat Donlin, Wanda Mawhinney, Paulette Hill and more.

■ A public display of art by the North Olympic Watercolorists graces The Fifth Avenue Retirement Center, 500 W. Hendrickson Road.

Iris Edey, Reiko Barclay, Rita Heywood, Robert Lee and Beverly Beighle are among those displaying their watercolors alongside the art work of their mentor, the late Gail St. Peter.

The show in honor of St. Peter will be open during the Art Walk tonight and stay on display through July.
