WEEKEND: Second Weekend Art Event kicks off tonight in Port Angeles

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, May 13.

PORT ANGELES — Chill out to some classic rock, take an invigorating stroll through the downtown waterfront district and peruse original art this weekend during the Second Weekend Art Event.

The monthly event was founded about 10 years ago by the Port Angeles Arts Council as a coalition of downtown Port Angeles businesses and art galleries to bring attention to the culture and variety offered there, organizers say.

Here’s a cross section of events:

■   Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., tonight features the band SuperTrees and artist in residence Jeff Tocher as part of 2nd Friday Art Rock, which kicks off art walk.

SuperTrees leaves nothing in arrears with their high-energy, rhythm-driven rock ‘n’ roll, said Dan Lieberman, an event coordinator.

With Steve Koehler on lead vocals and guitar, Rudy Maxion on vocals and bass, Harry Bidasha on vocals and drums and Lieberman on vocals and guitar, the musical group plays a mix of creative arrangements of rock classics and genetically engineered originals, Lieberman said.

Attendees are invited to come Friday to write lyrics and play percussion with the band or to work side-by-side with Tocher to create art.

A $3 cover charge helps support the musicians and artist, Lieberman said.

■   Karon’s Frame Center, 625 E. Front St., on Saturday features paintings by Port Angeles native Valle Nevaril who primarily paints local landscapes and gardens with oils and acrylics.

Her love of the beauty of the Northwest started at an early age, she said, and was influenced by her artistic father.

■   Heatherton Gallery, located inside The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave., this month features nature photographer Keith Ross. Also on display will be paintings by Tim Evers, who recently moved to Port Angeles from Alaska.

For more information, call 360-565-0308.

■   Harbor Art Gallery and Gift shop, 110 E. Railroad Ave., will feature the original work of 16 local artists from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The pieces include photography, paintings, sculpture, wood work, ceramics, glass and jewelry.

■   Studio Bob, an art gallery/event space located upstairs at 1181/2 E. Front St., on Saturday will showcase the “Blues and Photography” exhibit by Keith Scott.

Scott, a professional musician from Chicago, for the past 30 years has traveled throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.

In the past 10 years, he has taken an interest in fly fishing for trout especially in the Pacific Northwest.

This inspired him, he said, to combine his music work with his interest in fishing and photography — leading to a vast collection of images from his travels.

He will have his work on display at Studio Bob and will perform a short set of music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There also will be a no-host bar and refreshments in The Loom, nestled between the Alle’ Stage and Studio Bob Gallery.
